It would be better I believe to make the US Canada Australia maybe Brazil to have states, it would allow battles to be more enjoyable in those areas, so you can capture and build on western Australia, whilst someone else holds northern territory, The Canada /US map would be more enjoyable also.

Thoughts?

I agree, this will make the game more enjoyable. Now thinking if it's better to make them into separate 'countries' (the easiest way, no change in tech required) or to leave them as part of the bigger whole somehow...

In-between would be like the time zone areas maybe eastern us central ? or 5 or 6 states making an area.

No one really uses US or South America which is a shame.

States as countries is easiest on reflection - make some areas of the US like eastern side new england for example, ACT can be a city not a state in Aus

How about separating the US into the four United States Census Bureau regions Northeast, Midwest, West and South, or into the nine divisions?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_regions_of_the_United_States

That would result in the following seperation:

Northeast: New York, Boston
Midwest: Kansas City, Minneapolis, Indianapolis, Chicago
West: Denver, Seattle, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, Phoenix, Los Angeles, Portland, Honolulu, Anchorage
South: Washington, Atlanta, Miami, New Orleans, Memphis, Dallas, El Paso, Houston

Or:

New England: Boston
Mid-Atlantic: New York

East North Central: Indianapolis, Chicago
West North Central: Minneapolis, Kansas City

Mountain: Salt Lake City, Phoenix, Denver
Pacific: San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, Portland, Honolulu, Anchorage

South Atlantic: Washington, Miami, Atlanta
East South Central: Memphis
West South Central: New Orleans, El Paso, Houston, Dallas

9 sounds about right. 4 is too few, 50 is too many. I'm not sure about the names though - East South Central? West North Central? Mountain? Doesn't seem right somehow.

I thought the regions were:

Coastal (California, Oregon, Washington).
Western (States west of or containing the Rocky Mountains).
Southern (Those below the Missouri Compromise line, also including Missouri)
Midwestern (Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, all the way to Iowa and Kansas)
Northern (Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio)
New England (Includes Pennsylvania, New York, Massachusetts, etc.)

Possible areas of the United States of America (based on the history of the country):
Alaska
Oregon Country/Territory
Mexican Cession
Texas
Louisiana Purchase/Territory
Thirteen Colonies
Florida

(territories were regions which have not yet been formed into states)

http://www.shmoop.com/media/pictures/history/hist00020/l_hist00020_louisiana_purchase02.jpg

Possible areas of Russia (based on history, geography, and culture)
Russian Far East
Yakutia
Siberia
Ural FD (or just Ural)
Northwestern FD (or perhaps Komi, as this republic is largest and probably most characteristical [and exemplar] area of the Northwestern Federal District)
European Russia

Possible Areas of Canada (based on geography and political geography)
The Three Territories/Northern Territories (Yukon, Nanavut, and Northwest Territories)
British Columbia (from British Columbia to Saskatchewan)
Ontario (Manitoba and Ontario)
Labrador (Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Labrador Peninsula)

(why just four parts? because of very small population)

I don't think this division would be very appropriate.

Agree with Gary ham and the Russian ideas.

Just divide the US mainland map into say five sections with a star/capital in each - say California in west coast. Canada can be the states same as Australia.

Alaska and Hawaii their own stars.

It just allows more battles outside of Europe.

Good work guys its getting there!

I've edited my above post to add possible division of Canada.

If historical division of the USA isn't really what you want to use, you should use what Gary Ham proposed ( adding Alaska and Hawaii to it).

Thanks, I like your idea.

Overall, splitting the big countries increasingly seems like a very important thing to do. We have huge areas on the map that hardly see any action. Splitting them into smaller pieces will be a huge benefit to the gameplay. So, you can expect the changes in the near future - soon after the New year perhaps.

I think this is a great idea too. After splitting these countries, you think it might be possible to make some new maps? Like Pacific Theater & Indian Ocean. I think these would really help boost player naval stats.

Completely new maps are not possible at the moment, sorry. Very difficult technically. If you mean presets for the current map, I can't imagine what there is to do in the Pacific or Indian Ocean... However, what we're working on is scenarios - this way you will start on a map with countries and units already pre-set (like jumping into a middle of a game, in a way) - this way it will be possible to create scenarios for epic naval battles as well.

As a Canadian I think the division should be done along the senate allocation (there is a stipulation that our appointed house members comes from one of 4 regions which each get equal representation). That would require the regions to be:
Atlantic Canada
Quebec
Ontario
Western Canada

Including the territories would make no sense. They produce nothing. They are a huge sponge for federal funding. If you wanted to split it into 5 you could give British Columbia its own section. Alternatively you could include manitoba with Ontario (this is what risk traditionally does).
This is my input on the matter. But if Canada has 4 regions with 1-2 cities, then I think the US should have at least 8 regions, most of which would have more that 2 cities.

My two cents

I think you could just Pacific rim countries, for instance, USA, Japan, Australia, etc. That way the battle would be focused on the ocean rather than land. Indian ocean could include Mideast, India, and part of the African coast. Another possibility Could be West Europe+North America for Atlantic ocean battles. Or for a smaller scale, only countries bordering the Mediterranean.

As far as america goes, Gery's got the right idea, plus Alaska and Hawaii should be their own regions because they aren't geographically connected to anything else.

Well some people and i were discussing how about a separate map of all 50 states (or 48 for the continental) so there could be like "Civil War" or "Revolutionary War" also doing that with other countries like india china russia et cetera? not to have available in a world map but in their own maps

The current engine doesn't support multiple maps, even if they are almost the same. We're planning to add this in the future versions.

I think your onto something here. The weeknesss with USA is it gets taken out really fast with Merin. so if you make more places for it this will slow down the merine blitz some.
here is an idea how about spliting it into time zones then spliting those into north south.

On the cost you could do a 3 way split. North Atlantic(USA), Mid Atlantic(USA) South Atlantic (USA) to split up more of the income more evenly.

Also i do have a Question do you need to hold Hawii and Alaska curently to have whole country bonus? Maybe you could add some type of bonus for holding countrys with lots of diferent sections.

In that case you consider those parts as separate countries. For example, having Alaska and Hawaii means you have already two country bonus. Same works for any other part of the U.S.A, Brazil, Russia, China, Canada and Australia.

Add more cities to australia and split victoria and tasmania
suggestions for new cities: newcastle, wollongong, albury, wagga wagga, tamworth, dubbo as possibilities for nsw
geelong, bendigo, ballarat for vic
port augusta, mount gambier for sa
albany, mandurah, bunbury, broome, port hedland, esperance, geraldton for wa
palmerston, alice springs for nt

im not suggesting adding all of these, only some but heres a suggestion by an aussie
its way too weak compared to its region as it is
