Just played a round of atWar on the map "Diplomacy" and I can't say that I'm surprised in the least by what happened. In total there were three players: FreddiTheGamer, Assassino (not his exact name), and myself. Freddi's capital was only two stepping-stones away from mine, so naturally he asked for an alliance. I agreed, and I decided to focus my efforts on expanding into the East. After 20 or so rounds, Assassino and I were locked in a bitter struggle trying to secure the southern coastline. I noticed that Freddi's capital was captured by enemy forces, at which point I destroyed the occupying forces and let my ally reclaim the city. Freddi even gave me 5,000 in-game credits to help me in my offensive towards Assassino's capital. In chat he told me that he was "amassing" his forces and preparing to attack Assassino (which he in-fact never did). Two rounds later I was notified by the game that Freddi, the ally I trusted, cut our ties, and declared war on my country. Although I had more than enough resources to retake the capital I decided not to continue. I thanked Assassino for the enjoyable and skillful sparring of units, and told Freddi how extremely disappointed I was with his actions. In the end, I was met with a simple, "Sorry." Is this type of behavior commonplace in the AtWar Community? How could something like this be prevented in the future?

Diplomacy is part of the game! Dont hesitate to use or 'abuse' it to get the upper hand. Once you get better in this game you will not need to rely on alliances anymore but until then it is no shame in my opinion to thrive for winning games by taking advantage or even betraying your allies. Also you get much more SP.

At the end of the day it would be useless to complain seeing that it's a game, and I do understand that it's a part of the game, but I would've expected a bit more comradery
You must be a delight at parties.

07.10.2013 - 12:18 There's a board game called Diplomacy. It's all about making and breaking (betraying) alliances. "Its main distinctions from most board wargames are its negotiation phases (players spend much of their time forming and betraying alliances with other players and forming beneficial strategies)[2] and the absence of dice or other game elements that produce random effects." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diplomacy_%28game%29 Like you said, I would expect that type of behavior in a map called "Diplomacy". It is also relatively common in AtWar. Sometimes, allies will even abuse the feature that allows you to take another allies' open cities. That's even more traitorous

Diplomacy can be misused, there comes the term 'allyfag'. When you get better you will not need to rely on allies, i personally don't like much alliances but sometimes i know ill fight on multiple fronts so i make peace with one of them because I'm not good enough, peace is better for me because i keep my guard up because he can declare war any second and you have no obligations as oppose to an alliance.

The thing about alliances is that they can be broken. I, along with most people on AtWar, don't break alliances. While yes, it could get you much more SP and be very nice for you in that specific game, you lose credibility and that is the main issue.

Only Trust people from your Clan or friends that you have been in many battles time. Even at A high level I pulled a noob move not leaving behind 1 unit in my cap. I was 10th level and a 5th level captured it a cancelled ally. 10th level being taken out by a 5th level with 1 unit. So my advise is always leave 1 unit in the city and wall it

I think it would be great if we could have an unspoken rule where if somebody is getting gang-banged the gentleman's choice would be A. Don't jump him B. Give money support or C. Help him You should never trust an alliance made to secure you flank, the best alliances are with people you trust, share a common interest or are indebted to you. If you ever amass enough power and find another country at war on multiple fronts and you think you could turn the tide, help him. You typically will gain a very loyal and thankful ally, while having fun essentially saving a country from extinction and earning more SP.

Ally capping cities is considered a big taboo in at war, at least with the people i play. its up there with wallfucking, heck, i would say even worst. It's a despicable act and while some call it strategy, at the end of the day, it is because they;re noobs or assholes; simple as that.

First of all like Xenosapien said, If you don't want to be betrayed, don't ally. Contrary to most, I don't really have a problem with "breaking" of alliances. They are not blood pacts. In reality alliances shifted all the time, because in reality there is no such thing as an ally win. Factions ally to gain advantage or for a mutual interest but eventually these interests can change. For example USA and USSR were allied to destroy the Nazis but once they defeated the mutual they no longer had a common enemy and broke the alliance. Or in medieval japan clans would be allied to defeat the dominant clan but then break alliance once of their allies got too strong. An atwar example, lets say you are allied to this player who is just getting huge and powerful and destroying the remaining players but you could shift the balance and gain most of his lands if you end the alliance. Why do people settle for second place? Are you a beta? Changing alliances can makes the game really interesting. Anyway I avoid ffa games altogether. Team games or locked 0 alliances please.
