scientist in china makes first genetically modified baby through twins. the gene supposedly gives the girl immunity to hiv. this gene also enhances cognitive functions and could enhance intelligence. (heard it on npr radio i dont want to look for source)

what do you guys think?

This creates a ton of complications that we didn't have before.
Can they play sports/math competitions? Will they get discriminated against? Is it moral to modify people this way?
It's bound to happen eventually i suppose.

Support of individual choice in deciding whether or not one's child is generically modified.

Time and again, when it becomes state controlled it will lead to GATTACA dystopia... any other outcome is highly improbable given the repeated history of attempting these types of programs. But if a parent wants to roll the dice and try to enhance their child by making them HIV resistent or whatever, i see nothing wrong with wanting the best for your child.

I support the genetic research but not a modify of a not born person that go againist the will of the person which will born you should be shooted only for wantin modify a person before he come in this planets

Bro did you even watch gattaca? "Free choice" aka libertarian eugenics is exactly how that dystopia was produced. The government had nothing to do with it.

Of course this kind of thing has to be heavily regulated. There's potential for a lot of good to come from the technology but left to corporations and rich donors you are just asking for all kinds of unethical experiments to be done to your fellow man.

It certainly wasn't the individuals though.. it was either corporations or government in the movie. The decision to genetically enhance was individual, but that's not what created the dystopia. It became necessity for individuals to enhance in order for a child to get work.

If we allowed free choice we would just have race to the bottom as everyone tries to give their children the best possible modifications/advantages. Except those with religious or philosophical issues, or poor people who can't afford it, who would get screwed.

i did learn something reading the article though - that NASA considered it the most scientifically plausible sci-fi movie. Surprised NASA would even make a statement like that, but i would agree that in a corporate world, that's exactly what you would expect.
